Pac-Man

Objective:

  • Students ‘Ghosts’ attempt to jump from one hoop to another, without Pac-Man getting them.

Set-up:

  • Create a 4x4/5x5 grid using hula hoops (or circular arrangements of cones) on a flat surface like blacktop or grass.

  • Prepare 2-3 soft dodgeballs/ball or pinnies.

How to Play:

Starting Positions: Each player stands inside a hula hoop (or circle).

  1. Pac-Man: Choose one or more players to be "Pac-Man." They will hold the dodgeball(s) or pinnie(s).

  2. "1, 2, JUMP!": The coach (or designated leader) will call out a rhythmic cadence: "1, 2, JUMP!"

  3. Movement: On the word "JUMP," all players, including Pac-Man, must jump to an adjacent hula hoop in any direction (forward, backward, left, or right). Players cannot skip hoops.

  4. Tagging: If Pac-Man jumps into the same hoop as another player ("Ghost"), they are tagged and "eliminated."

  5. Elimination Exercise: Eliminated players perform a designated exercise (e.g., jumping jacks, push-ups) before waiting for the next round.

  6. New Pac-Man: The last remaining "Ghost" becomes the new Pac-Man for the next round.

Safety Points - Important:

  • Awareness of Surroundings:

    • Players should be aware of where other players are jumping to avoid collisions.

    • They should also be aware of the boundaries of the playing area.

  • Controlled Jumps:

    • Jumps should be controlled to prevent tripping or falling.

    • Avoid jumping too high or landing awkwardly.

  • Soft Landings:

    • Players should aim for soft landings to minimize impact on their joints.

  • Avoid Pushing/Shoving:

    • There should be no pushing or shoving during the game.

    • The game is about quickness and strategy, not physical force.

Progression:

  1. Multiple Pac-Men: Add an extra Pac-Man to increase the challenge and excitement.

  2. Balance Challenge: Have all players jump on one leg, requiring them to maintain balance while moving.
