Musical Hoops

Set-Up

Set up a circle of hula hoops on the blacktop or a line of hula hoops at the front of your classroom.

How to Play

The game is played like regular musical chairs: the music plays (the coach sings a song), and students walk in a single file around the hoops. When the music/signing stops, they must all put one foot inside one of the hoops. Then one hoop is taken away, and the music begins again.

And here's where the game differs from the traditional version. More than one student can use a hoop. So as hoops are removed, students aren't eliminated, but more are forced to share the remaining hoops.

A great advantage to this variation is that you don't need to start the game with a hoop for every student. So you can play it with large classes.

Progressions

To make the game competitive, you could have a maximum of four students inside each hoop when the music stops. Any students not with one foot in a hoop are out of the game until the next round.

You can also make it a two-person or one-person maximum per hoop to help have one winner.

Alternate Rules

When the music/singing stops, the coach shouts a color corresponding to a hula hoop. The players run to the specific color hoop. The first four to put a foot inside get one point.

Play the first person to a specific amount of points or a time limit.
