Basketball Relay

How to Play

A relay race is a great way to engage multiple students in a fun, organized, competitive activity. The secret to creating a great relay race is to start with a simple relay race, then add new progressions and challenges.

This specific relay race is just an example of how you can do a creative basketball relay race that can last for 15 to 20 minutes with progressions.

Be creative and make your own with the equipment you have available.

Example

Make two to four teams of three or more students. Designate each team with a color, number, or another name, such as a country.

On your command, the first student dribble (bounces) the basketballs around the disc and back to the start. Once they get back to the start, they give the ball to the next team member. The 2nd student repeats and tags the 3rd student, and so on.

Once a player has completed the run, they must line up in a straight, quiet line with their hand in the air.

The winning team is the first to have all their team dribble the basketball around the disc and be in a straight line standing quietly with their hands in the air.

Progression 1

One student stands next to the cone and remains there for the entire race.

The other students dribble the basketball up to the blue spot. Then make a bounce-ball pass to the student on the cone who throws it back. They catch it and dribble the ball back to the start.

The sequence repeats.

Progression 2

The same as the previous progression, but this time when student ‘1’ passes the ball back to student ‘2’, student ‘2’ now has to go and make a basket, before they can run back to the start.

Once they make a basket they dribble back to the start and pass the ball to the next student in line, and the sequence repeats.

Additional Progressions

Have fun creating additional ways that you can make progressions to test the children and also keep the relay fresh.
