Relay Race

How to Play

A relay race is a great way to engage multiple students in a fun, organized, competitive activity. The secret to creating a great relay race is to start with a simple relay race, then add new progressions and challenges.

This specific relay race is just an example of how you can do a creative relay race that can last for 15 to 20 minutes with progressions.

Be creative and make your own with the equipment you have available.

Example

Make four teams of three or more students. Designate each team with a color, number, or another name, such as a country.

On your command, the first student runs around the ball and back to the start. Once they get back to the start, they tag the next team member. The 2nd student repeats and tags the 3rd student, and so on.

Once a player has completed the run, they must line up in a straight, quiet line with their hand in the air.

The winning team is the first to have all their team run around the ball and be in a straight line standing quietly with their hands in the air.

Progression 1

The first student runs to the ball, then throws it back to student two. They catch it and throw it back to student one.

Student one places the ball back on the cone and runs back to their line. Student two runs up to the ball and then repeats the sequence by throwing the ball to student three. The sequence repeats.

Progression 2

Student one stands on the spot and remains there for the entire race.

Student two runs to the hula hoop, goes through the hoop, and then runs to the ball. They pick up the ball, throw it to student one, and student one throws it back.

Student 2 places the ball back on the cone and runs back to their line, where they tag the next student who repeats the sequence.

You can repeat this relay a few times by switching student one with others students.

Progression 3

Student one runs to the top of the course and around the green cone. Then back to the start to tag the next student.
